Spouse or partner visa

A family visa lets you join your husband, wife, civil partner, fiancé(e) or unmarried partner in the UK. It is usually granted for two and a half years and can lead to settlement after five years.

Who this visa is for

  • Your partner is a British or Irish citizen, is settled in the UK, or has certain other immigration status.
  • You are married, in a civil partnership, or have been living together in a relationship for at least two years.
  • You intend to live together permanently in the UK.

Key requirements

  • A combined income of at least £29,000 a year, unless an exception applies (for example, if your partner receives certain disability or carer's benefits).
  • Evidence that your relationship is genuine and ongoing.
  • Proof of your English language ability.
  • Suitable accommodation for you both in the UK.
